At Massey Law Group (MLG), supporting the nonprofit community is central to our work. We believe nonprofits are essential to a thriving community, and we are proud to work with organizations and community partners dedicated to making a positive impact throughout Tampa Bay.
One organization doing this important work is Community Foundation Tampa Bay (CFTB), which connects donors, professional advisors, nonprofits, and community partners to help create lasting impact throughout our region.
MLG is pleased to collaborate with CFTB and its team, including Nicolette “Nici” Lewis, JD, Associate Counsel, Philanthropic Giving. This relationship reflects what we value deeply at MLG: bringing together professionals and organizations with complementary expertise to better serve our clients and our community.
Charitable giving can involve more than making a donation. Individuals, families, and businesses may also consider how philanthropy fits into their broader financial, estate, or business plans. Likewise, nonprofit organizations must navigate governance, tax-exemption, and regulatory requirements as they pursue their missions.
Community Foundation Tampa Bay works with donors and their professional advisors to develop charitable giving strategies based on donors’ individual goals. Its philanthropic resources include donor-advised funds, planned giving, endowments, family foundations, scholarships, and corporate philanthropy.
The Foundation can also work alongside a donor’s attorneys and financial advisors when charitable planning involves more complex assets, such as real estate, business interests, retirement plans, or other noncash assets. Collaboration among these professionals can help individuals and organizations consider charitable goals from multiple perspectives and develop thoughtful strategies for creating an impact.
Community Foundation Tampa Bay also provides resources designed to help strengthen the region’s nonprofit and philanthropic communities.
For nonprofit organizations, these resources include grant opportunities, the Critical Needs List, nonprofit endowment and reserve funds, and other tools designed to help organizations build capacity and advance their missions. For attorneys, CPAs, wealth advisors, and other professionals assisting clients with charitable planning, the Foundation offers educational resources and expertise related to philanthropic giving.
CFTB has introduced Frank, an AI-powered charitable giving resource developed primarily for professional advisors. Frank allows users to explore charitable giving questions using expert-informed research and request the sources supporting its responses. For individuals interested in learning more about charitable giving, CFTB offers Max, an AI resource focused on philanthropy and giving.
These tools can provide a useful starting point for learning and research while complementing the individualized advice clients receive from their legal, tax, and financial professionals.
Community Foundation Tampa Bay describes its role as connecting philanthropists with nonprofits addressing challenges throughout our community. Its work brings together donors, nonprofits, businesses, professional advisors, and other community partners to help strengthen the Tampa Bay region.
Nicolette Lewis, JD, Associate Counsel, Philanthropic Giving, Community Foundation Tampa Bay, said, “Working in the nonprofit sector means having the opportunity to connect people with purpose. I love being part of work that brings together donors, professional advisors, nonprofits, and community leaders to turn generosity into meaningful impact. For me, it’s incredibly rewarding to know that the relationships we build and the work we do today can strengthen our community for generations to come.”
That collaborative philosophy closely aligns with MLG’s approach to serving nonprofit organizations. MLG represents nonprofits working in areas including the environment, animal welfare, health, education, the arts, economic development, diversity and inclusion, and religious and faith-based missions. We assist nonprofit clients throughout the organization’s lifecycle, including entity formation, federal tax-exemption applications, ongoing governance, state charitable regulation, and significant corporate transactions.
We also counsel businesses on corporate philanthropy and cause marketing, including corporate foundations, sponsorships, fundraising initiatives, social media campaigns, and corporate co-ventures.
At MLG, we believe strong communities are built through relationships. Our work with Community Foundation Tampa Bay, Nici Lewis, Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers (PFAWL), and other organizations throughout our region gives us opportunities to share knowledge, connect resources, and work together in support of the people and organizations serving Tampa Bay. We are proud of these relationships and grateful for the expertise our community partners provide.
“Strong nonprofit organizations are essential to strong communities. Our relationship with Community Foundation Tampa Bay brings together legal guidance, philanthropic expertise, and community resources to help nonprofits and donors create positive change. When we bring our areas of expertise together, we can better support the people who are working every day to make Tampa Bay stronger,” said Starlett Massey, Attorney and Founding Shareholder of MLG.
